History of Jet Magazine
Jet Magazine has gone through various changes since it was introduced into the market in 1951. This magazine played a very important role during the Civil Rights Movement in America. It is a weekly magazine that is news-oriented and its main focus is on the African American population. Some of the topics covered in this magazine include news, black history sports, religion, business, celebrities, African American culture and fashion. It was started by John H. Johnson who was the head of Johnson Publishing Co. in Chicago. It gained popularity among the public because of its focus on activities that led to the civil rights revolution in the American society.
When the
Jet Magazine
was launched into the market, the company had already created several publications that targeted African Americans. The founder of the magazine was keen on replicating the style used by the Reader’s Digest and the only difference is that it was for the African American community.
Jet Magazine targeted a niche that had not been exploited in the market. When it was first started, the magazine’s editors were focused on providing people with news about current events. The news included in the magazine was topical and it addresses international and national events that had an impact on the African American community. This magazine also provided information about the voting process and scholarship application processes. This magazine is like People Magazine because it usually highlights entertainers and there is a lot of information about celebrities.
Jet Magazine is still published in a small digest size format. When it was first published, this magazine was only available in black and white. This changed in 1999 when its December issue was published in color. The publishers changed its publishing format in 2009 when they started publishing double issue at the end of every month.
Jet Magazine also provides beauty and fashion tips to its readers. The magazine is also famous for its dating advice, health tips, political coverage and diet guides. In some of its issues, the magazine also covers fashion shows.
The magazine’s cover photos usually correspond to the main story. Some of the cover stories it has included in the past are celebrity weddings. The publishers also highlight special holidays in the magazine including Mother’s Day. The Jet Magazine also focuses on encouraging the African American community to improve their lives and to work hard towards achieving their goals. In 2010, the magazine introduced new content, design, logo and layout in order to appeal to a more diverse audience. During the change process, the magazine maintained its love and beauty sections.
